I have a few 1 quart coffee cans, and will 'recycle' them for this purpose if I can find fruits and/or vegetables that will grow to maturity in them.

chives
oregeno
cilantro
cherry tomatoes
green onions
strawberries
baby carrots
radishes
a green bean plant ( one in each)
a pepper plant
dill
a pea plant
(some of these plants are vine plants and need something to hold onto for support)
good luck
oh and put some rocks in the bottom of the can so the dirt doesnt wash out as easy when you water.

I would think that a coffee can would be too small to support the root system of a bigger plant like a tomato vine, but it should be big enough for some herbs and smaller plants. That sounds like fun!

bunch/bush beans
I actually grew a cucumber in a gallon size pot.
radishes
lettuce/several varieties
green onions/scallions
strawberries/several pots needed to make a bowl of berries and cream.
spinach
swiss chard
radishes
chives **almost any of the herbs***

There is a plethora of things that can be grown in small pots.

grow some of the miniature orange/lemon/lime trees or tangerine.
