I was curious since Mitt Romney claimed in the You Tube debates that he reads the Bible all the time. Was he substituting the word 'Bible' for 'the Book of Mormon' to avoid bringing up his religion?

Mormons read the Holy Bible as well as other books on religion. I am not a Mormon but I have all of their books and leaflets. It is a religion that accepts the Holy Bible and the Book of Mormon as the bases for their religion.Basically as a person who has studied religion for many years I can say without qualification that all religions are very similar in make up since most of them came from the same sources thousands of years ago. For example when Mohammed was writing the Koran (dictating is more like it because Mohammed couldn't write) he used many exerts from the Hebrew books of law because he was fascinated by them. The story of Moses goes back centuries before it was written in the Holy Bible. It is a little different but the reader would easily grasp the similarity. Sorry I went on and on but it a subject that I studied for so many years and I do not get the opportunity to write about it too often.

Yes they read both, but as a former Mormon, I know that they discredit the Bible as an authoritative document by saying that they believe it only as far as its translated correctly. Joseph Smith did his own "translation" by supposedly filling in the blanks where the Bible authors fell short. The "translation" is a joke to Biblical scholars. No document evidence or dead scrolls have corroborated Smith's additions. He changes one part of a chapter and throws the whole chapter out of context. In fact made changes to one chapter in the Bible, yet did change the same chapter that appeared in the Book of Mormon. Very inconsistent to say the least. Their prophet can overrule any doctrine he chooses. I'm not making this up. The LDS will tell you that they believe in living prophets rather than dead prophets. The fact is, God is consistent and there is never a reason to override scripture to make way for the new...unless you're selling a lie.

Personally, I read the Bible about 4 times more than the Book of Mormon. I look up things topically. The Bible is bigger and has more references.

Yes, Mormons revere the Bible and the Book of Mormon as scripture. We also revere two other works: the Doctrine & Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price.

As far as reading spiritual texts, we read what we enjoy. Personally I'm working my way through the Qu'ran and the Upanishads.

Though we don't revere non-Christian religious texts as scripture, we don't condemn them as evil. We're encouraged to seek out truth from wherever we can find it.

Are you seriously asking this question? OF COURSE Mormons read the Bible. The Bible is read by all Christian religions, not just the select few that some of you people recognize as Christian. This is insane. I'm no Mormon, but I never knew there were so many people in the world who actually think Mormons are not Christians and don't read the Bible. This would make good thesis material for study by some English student looking to get a Master's. It's just incomprehensible to me that so many people are so clueless about Mormons.

EDIT: Genderbias above me - you're beyond clueless. As a matter of fact, you're beyond help. You need to either get out of your world of fantasy or quit trying to drag the rest of us into it.

EDIT 2: I get two thumbs down for telling the absolute, naked truth. Keep 'em coming, guys. You're only making yourselves look more clueless.

EDIT 3: The Book Of Mormon is not a parallel to the Bible. It's a suppliment to the Bible. You don't think of the Book of John, the Book of Job, the Book of Genesis or the Book of Deuteronomy as "parallels" to the Bible, do you? Are you starting to get that clue, or are you still in your "parallel" fantasy universe?

So Boom, below me, you don't think these fancy Bible-thumping evangilical, born-again wackos are convincing brainwashed Pentacostals to line their pockets with this 10% of income tithing BS?

EDIT 4: I already stated that I'm not a Mormon, but I am defending some friends here. I drink too much beer, have too foul a mouth and one too many tattoos, (one,) to be allowed into the Mormon Church at this stage in my life... LOL

And last one from me. Daniel L. should get the best answer here. I wish I could have explained things as rationally as he did; I let frustration get the better of me, which is just one more reason why I wouldn't make a good Mormon! LOL

Morons read the Bible as intently as the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon is the tale of Christians in the Americas. Basically, a Jewish family is sent by God acroos the sea to begin a society in the Latin and South America regions. Once there the family splits into two groups, Nephites led by Nephi, and Laminites, led by Nephi's brother Lamoni. It tells the story of the Nephites and their wars with the Lamonites. And Jesus's appearance to both groups shortly after ascending to the Heavens in front of his Apostles.

Mormons believe that the book of Mormon is another history of the Christian religion. They do not believe the Book is Mormon is better or more important than the Bible, but simply a restored version of the Bible. If you go to any Mormon book store or temple, they sell Bibles that include the Book of Mormon, Doctrines and Convenant, and all other reading they believe is required to live a full spiritual life.

We read both. The Book of Mormon is Another Testimony of Jesus Christ, just like the Bible. Not exactly like the Bible but close. They're both testimonies of Jesus Christ.

Mormons read both!

Members are encourage to be informed about differences in beliefs and spiritual teachings in order to remove any doubts regarding their faith and their church.

Mormon teachings are more stringent than catholics and other christian beliefs in terms of lifestyle and family values. No smoking, alcohol, gambling, for example, are strictly enforced. Young members are sent on "preaching missions" before getting married and the church promotes the creation of large families to increase membership.

These and other practices led other christian religions to consider the Mormon faith as a cult.

Please visit www.lds.org or www.mormon.org for some of our basic beliefs.

We read all of God's word. This year in Sunday School for example, we have read the entire New Testament. Last year we studied the Old testament. Each member of the church is also counseled to have personal and family scripture study and prayer. Our scriptural cannon also includes the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and covenants which we also read regularly.

Please contact me if you have any other questions regarding our faith.

Mormons claim to read both but they actually only believe in the book of Mormon. They talk about the bible to keep mainstream and get in the door but after that it's out the window.
They can't technically believe in both because the bible and the book of Mormon contradict each other.
I assume in Romney's case he says he reads it so he stays in favour with the majority of Christians.
To Dan: I don't think anyone is saying they're not Christians, the only qualification for that is belief in Jesus, and they believe in him, we know. But the Book of Mormon is a parrallel of the Bible so why have a book of Mormon if you believe in the bible unless you dont really?

EDIT
I'm not going to say who, but I think someone is here is a Mormon...

EDIT
Ok, last one. If the Book of Mormon is not a parrallel (getting way off topic here), Why does the book follow the timeline of the bible and mention all the major players in it? And why doesn't the bible ever mention any of the added people in the Book of Mormon?
