The carpet is a very thin wall to wall carpet.I would like to keep the mosiac- tiles.( which means no hacking of the tiles )

What kind of adhesive was used (if you know)?

Sometimes home improvement warehouses (like Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.) will have a selection of dissolvents you can try. Ask the store staff. It's usually with paint thinners and grout stain removers and stuff. But be careful, because that sort of stuff is often toxic! It may also strip your tiles not only of the grout between them, but also any shininess or pattern or color. Your tiles may, in fact, be ruined.

HAVE YOUR CONTRACTOR SATURATE THE CARPET WITH ACETONE AND LET IT SOAK FOR A FEW HOURS.
