What kind of counsellor? There are many types specialising in various crisis areas!
Generally, if you intend to work in schools or colleges, you'll need to master some of these duties:
-Provide personal, academic, career, and college counseling for students
-Serve as liaison between teacher, parent, and student
-Serve on Child Study Committee, IEP Committees, and 504 Committees
-Write recommendations for colleges and scholarships
Check record, credits, and verified credits
-Provide scholarship and financial aid information
-Administer and interpret PSAT’s, SAT’s, AP’s, and SOL’s
-Contribute articles for the Guidance section of the CSHS newsletter
-Work with outside agencies, hospitals, and private counselors
-Serve on the Guidance Advisory Committee
-Serve on Core Team
-Communicate with school, community, etc.
-Present classroom guidance materials for appropriate goals
-Maintain and update individual career portfolios
-Serve on school selection committees for scholarships
-Serve as advisory committee member for ARBTC
-Participate in community events
-Assist in registration process
-Check registration information, make corrections and changes
-Facilitate group counseling
-Assist new parents and students in registration
-Complete summer school registration
-Administer Validation Testing for students transferring from non-accredited schools
-Complete Gifted Screening
-Serve on Crisis Team
