i have moved and the cable modem in another room from where i need it so i am asking how do i or can it be set up wirelessly with out a pc connected to it 24/7 how do i do this and get it to work

I think the answer to your question is: You need a wireless router.
You do not need any clent computers connected to it. If you get a router you plug it in to your modem, and then you plug the pc and the laptop in to the router.
for what you are trying to do, a linksys wrt54g will probably do nicely, and they are cheap these days.

First of you will need a router to set up a wireless network. Then there's 2 ways with which you can connect your desktop to the wireless network. You can either use a USB network adapter or a PCI network adapter.
If you are not good with computers I would suggest you use USB adapter, all you have to do is insert the adapter in any available USB port, load the software and connect.
If you decide to use PCI card, you are gonna have to do some simple installation.
PCI adapters are usually cheaper as compared to USB one's. Choice is yours...

Are you looking to connect your DESKTOP wireless? Is so, you'll need a "wireless router" and a "desktop wireless card" for your desktop.

Check eBay and search for "desktop wireless card"
