to be open in oreder for the doctor to feel the head...
im 35 weeks and i am dialated 1 and they say cervix is real thin so im hoping to go soon !!! this is my third!! anyways i was just wondering because i see all these other Q&A's and people are saying that they are not dialated but the doct can still feel the babies head.. i thought you have to be dialated to feel anything like that. and in order for the baby to come dont you have to dialate all the way to 10? if so then if they can feel the baby's head doesnt that mean labor is close or something?

I think they mean the doctor can feel the pressure of the head pressing downward onto the cervix, not that the doctor can actually feel the head and hair.

It is more that they are feeling the position of the baby's head, not the actual head itself. The head is harder than the cervix, so it can be felt through it. However, if you are dialated 1, there is a 1 cm. opening. You have to be dialated at 10 for the baby to be delivered.

I don't know how they feel it...and I'm not convinced they really do. I think it is supposed to be the shape they feel up against the cervix that tells them. My doc said baby was in position at week 30 and every week after that. Then on week 37 they did an ultrasound because I was having some problems and were surprised to discover that the baby was not only breech but stuck in my rib cage. So...do they really feel it? In my case the butt was pretending to be a head! LOL

Leopold's maneuver is done to know the position of the baby, if it is breech or cephalic(head), and its presentation...

in labor, there are signs if you are about to give birth, the intensity, frequency and interval of the labor..

Doctors are trained for this sweetie.....your cervix is paper this which alows the doctor to feel what he "thinks" is the head....they can confirm this with an ultrasound...hang in there your're almost there!!!!

Even a really fat doctor doesn't have fingers much more than 1cm in diameter. He can get a finger through a 1cm opening and feel that the head is seated.
