Just like animals, our bodies respond to natural cues in nature that subconciously tell our bodies to wind down and prepare for sleep.

I would recomend dimming the lights an hour or two before you would like to go to bed, this simmilates dusk and the sun setting as it does in nature.

Also try turning the tv volume off or down and just quiet down the house as much as possible. If you'll notice outdoors, as night falls and animals go to sleep, it gets quiet. Same theory for us.

One last thing, instead of being online, watching tv (especially adrenaline pumping movies), or playing games, try laying down and reading a magazine or book to relax and slow down your body after an exciting day.

I hope these suggestions help.
However, if you find that your mind runs wild as you lay in bed, and all the days conversations and activities don't let you fall asleep, you may want to experiment with a sleep aid.
I would never recommend prescription drugs, but I do know of a 100% natural sleep aid that has been very effective helping me get a good nights sleep and wake up rested and alert. It is called DREAMZ and can be purchased online at the following website:

Best of luck!

Lol benedryl I've use that a few times to go to sleep myself just don't make a habit of it besides you developing a dependency I'm sure there's some other harm it could do to your body.
Try these things:
Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Tea with extra Valerian just don't drink a big cup or you'll be waking up in the middle of the night up to go to the bathroom.
A medium cup of warm milk
A hot bath
Soothing r&b or jazz music or a Classic Chillout CD
