Living in South West Kentucky.
What are some varieties that do well in this climate and soil? Would like to grow a few vines for home wine making.

I live in the bluegrass area of central Kentucky and there are over a half dozen wineries within a forty mile radius of my home. New vineyards are being planted yearly, many of them by the owners of the fabled thorobred horse farms looking cash in on long established, and well known farm names. Long known for bourbon whiskey distilleries, most people are unaware that Kentucky once had a thriving wine industry. While large numbers of Scots and English settled central Kentucky east of the Kentucky River, large numbers of French settled the area west of the river centered in what is now Anderson County. They brought their winemaking skills with them and established a thriving wine making trade in years past. Prohibition put an end to the business, but it is now being rediscovered.

There are many free resources available to help you get started. The University of Kentucky is heavily involved in this field as Kentucky farmers look to replace tobacco as a cash crop. The Kentucky Vinyard Society also offers a lot of information including recommendations on grape varieties suitable to different geographical areas of the state.

There is so much information available that it is hard to know where to start. My best advice is to do a Yahoo! search for "grapes in Kentucky" (include the quotation marks in the Yahoo! search box) and begin exploring the results. You will see links to both UK and the Kentucky Vinyard Society on the first page of results. You can change the wording of your searches as you come across new ideas and I am certain you will find plenty to keep you interested.

Good luck with your plans to make some wine!

i won't be in a position to answer for particular, yet we strengthen them in Nebraska and it gets plenty less warm here than it does in Kentucky - we've countless wineries in this state. in addition they strengthen grapes in top state long island and make wine from frozen grapes. i could say attempt it. seem for chilly climate varieties.
