If you were in a Word program they usually automatically save every 5 minutes so if you open the program back up your document should be there. If it was an e-mail you're probably SOL. Sorry :/

in windows xp try opening the program you used to write the letter. sometimes the computer saves a ghost image of the file in case of unexpected trouble (ie a shutdown).
If there is a ghost image available the program will call it up when it starts and give you the option to save it.
If you have ghost image you got lucky.
If you don't have a ghost image... you got unlucky I'm afraid.
Hoping you are haunted...

If you are using Microsoft Word, there should be a recovery feature enabled by default in cases that this would happen. Try opening the program you were using and see if it opens up automatically. You should only lose a few sentences or words.
