Turning your engine at a lower RPM not only saves gas, it also reduces wear and tear on your engine.

My last two vehicles have had five-speed manual transmissions and I use 5th gear. I like to keep the revs down to around 3,000 or lower unless I need the power for better control.

Engine speeds will vary with the size and number of cylinders in the engine. My last three vehicles have all been 4-cylinder engines which usually turn faster than a V-6 or V-8 engine.

hello buddy

shifting to 5th doesnt really hurt anything. 4th gear generates more torque then 5th which in not necessary for long and steady drives. whenever you shift to a higher gear you can notice that the RPM comes down. decrease is RPM means decrease in the number of crankshaft rotations which indirectly means less number of strokes therby means less fuel consumption.

Moreover lower gears are intended for high loads wheres higher gears are for low loads.

the best rpm for running your car is 4. (varies for different cars). so make sure u run your car at the best rpm for optimal fuel efficiency

Ideal cruising rpm is around 1,900rpm, so if you are turning 3,000-3,500rpm you are wasting a lot of fuel. Not to mention the extra wear and tear of the engine.

It will be less wear on your engine and you'll get better gas mileage if you shift into 5th.
