The Organization for African Unity was the brainchild of President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana however its first chair was Halie Selassie of Ethiopia.
If you are referring to Nkrumah then yes - the CIA did back a military coup to replace him due to his leftist leanings economically. He remains a much respected leader of post colonial Africa
