Changing fractions to decimals.... How is the answer 0.8 gotten from 4/5? This thing I am looking at says divide the numerator by denominator. So, 4 divided by 5 is 0.8 on the calculator. But where does the 8 come from? I need to know how to do it without a calculator. I need it explained in detail.

To do it manually, for example 4/5, you can't divide 4 by 5 right away because 5 is greater than 4, so the thing is you have to add a decimal point to 4 (say 4.0) now for your answer you have to put zero (0) on top of the number 4 and then the decimal point (.) and then divide 40 by 5 and the answer would be 8, so your answer would be 0.8 (sorry it's a bit hard to explain in words without showing the actual solution)

Without a calculator..its called long division. to divide 4 by 5 you write 4.0 then divide 5 into 40 and you get 8 as the answer. but you need to place the decimal point in front of the 8 so the answer is .8

there is probable a fractions to decimal key on your calculator (F?D). or you divide the 1st sort by using the 2d. 2/25 = 0.8 19/20 = 0.ninety 5 4/5 = 0.8 one hundred eighty/2 hundred = 0.9 12/sixteen = 0.seventy 5 13/20 = 0.sixty 5 one hundred fifty/3 hundred = a million/2 19/25 = 0.seventy six 12/40 = 0.3 11/20 = 0.fifty 5

a decimal answer is just like .8 = 8/10 because you want to get the denominator = 10 in this case because then it will be the same as being in the tenths place as a decimal. to get the denominator of this fraction equal to 10, you would multiply the top and the bottom of the fraction by 2, because whatever you do to the top of the fraction, you must do to the bottom. then you'll get 8/10. 8/10 is the same as .8 because a number over ten in a fraction is the same as the top number being in the tenths place. If it was a number over 100 it would be like a number in the tenths and hundredths place as a decimal.

~Well take your example. 4/5 would mean there is a total of 5 pieces of say... a dollar. Well, a dollar is 100 cents, 100 divided into 5 parts= 20. If you only have four parts of that dollar, you have 4 times 20 which equals 80.
~5/5 is equal to one. so 1 divided by 5 is .20! If you only have 4 of the five parts, .20 times 4 equals .80!
~Hope i helped a little!

to get from fractions to decimals, you have to understand that a decimal is always written in tens. (or hundreds, thousands, etc, but it always has to end in a 0).

.8 just means 8/10.

so to get that from 4/5, you have to multiply the five by two, which means the 4 has to be multiplied by two as well.

4/5 * 2/2 = 8/10; .8

I m so glad I am not the only one that could not figure this out...ugh! Thank all of you but the easiest for me was the adding the 0 to the 4 to make 40 and dividing by 5...=0.08 easiest way to figure it out:) Was trying to work on my series 7 book and using a formula for determining a value of a *** right...this was helpful:)

Simple!

Make 0.8 ---> 80. (by moving the decimal two places to the right)

Next put 80./100

Divide and you get 4/5

Hope this helps!

Oh, another math lesson!
4/5 x 20/20 = 80/100 (You want denominator to be 100)
80/100 = 0.80 or 0.8
