Why do people make such a big deal about race, class and sexuality?

We've been socialized into understanding that we need to classify things to make them make sense but it also has traditionally to do with power. "If you label me you negate me" was a fancy philospher once said. By categorizing people into colours, classes and sexes we can rank them as to which is best... thus those in the top group can over lord those under them. All of these ideas are social constructions... race doesn't really exist on a DNA level, Class is based on money, which is a piece of paper with a number assigned to it, and because the majority of the population is heterosexual they decided that those who aren't just don't make sense... also we live in a male dominated society because of power struggles way back when... we're creatures of habits. and these structures are really bad habits to break.

Because many people can not just take care of the business of daily life without finding differences to separate them from other people, to make them feel superior to other people. If they don't divide everyone into catagories that they can belittle or avoid then there is now way for them to stand out in the crowd of humanity.

We all have beliefs which we consider important. I, personally answer "human" on forms asking for my race, "yes" to sex, and give the year of my graduating class. These are all artificial divisions which make little sense to me unless it's to divide the people into smaller, squabbling groups, as the Romans did--"Divide and conquer."
