If those producing the movies don't make money from doing so, why would they do it? They make movies to make a profit. If the movies are downloaded illegally, they make no profit. No profit, no movies.

That's not to say that they don't already make a lot of profit, I really don't know. But I do know that for Tom Cruise or Julia Roberts to make 20 million dollars for one movie is obscene.

It doesn't. It actually lowers it.

Supply vs. Demand.

If the product is available for free then there is less demand to view it. Less demand means less profit. Less profit means money goes to the producers and distributors.

Producers and Distributors are now in a catch 22. They are already losing money, but raising prices only shifts the supply/demand curve away from them. They now can't win.

In a way, it affects the viewer by reducing the quality of movies that get made. If there is no profit to be made then less talent will go into the making of films. So eventually the viewer pays the same amount for substandard product. In THIS sense, movies get more expensive. Kinda like a P/E ratio or a Price to Book for stocks.

The idea that illegal downloading raises prices is a crock. It's a scare tactic that doesn't make sense. It's like telling kids that ALL drugs will hook you. It just ain't true. Look at the store shelves, I can buy last year's hits for $10. I'm not gonna pay anymore because it just isn't worth anymore. Sorry...No one 'needs' DVDs or music album CDs.

There has to be a realization that the average American can't spend like they did in the 90s.

Illegal downloading reduces the profits of the movie producers. Thus, they might increase the prices of movie viewing to recover losses.

To recover the moneys lost...

but if they didn't charge $10 to see a movie, and they were actually coming out with good movies, people might be inclined to pay for them.

With less and less people legally watching movies, the people that make the movies earn less and less money. So they need to increase prices to make the same amount of money.

because if not enough people are actually paying for the product, they need to raise the prices to make up for the people who aren't paying for it. Just like if you steal from a store, we have to cover that theft cost.
