Hey everybody. My family is headed to san diego for christmas. We will be staying on the beach. I'd like to know if I'll be able to tan at this time of year down there. Will the weather even be warm enough to walk around in just a swimsuit?

Also, will I be able to swim in the water at this time of year? I've gone swimming in the san francisco bay in september, so obviously the cold doesn't really get to me.

As Pat D already said, the weather is hit or miss. We have a stretch of really nice days then a few days of not so good weather. Last Fri and Sat is was cool, cloudy, and rainy. Sunday was sunny but not warm and today and the next day or too are really sunny and in the 70's.

There will probably be at least a day or two depending on how long your stay is that you can get a tan. The weather just varies this time of year more so than any other time of year. It will be 75 and sunny one day and cloudy and 65 the next and at night it gets relatively cold, the coast can get all the way down to 50 and inland valleys into the 40's. But we also can get Santa Ana winds that push temps into the 80's.

If you have gone swimming in SF Bay anytime of year then you will be able to handle the water here. It is cold for most people but right now it's about the same temp as SF Bay is in summer, 55-59. It's cold but seems like you don't mind it. But be careful b/c this time of year the water can get dangerous b/c of storms and do not go swimming for 72 hours after it rains b/c of runoff.

San Diego, although known for our great climate, can get chilly during this time of year. Right now, the temperature outside is 56 degrees. However, it is night time and it doesn't normally get that cold in the day.

You should be able to lay out and get some sun, but it won't be as warm as you might think. As for the water, if you're used to the northern California water in fall, you may survive. You're certainly more brave than I.

The weather will be hit or miss. Usually every Dec or Jan we will have a run or 4 or 5 days with beautiful weather where people flock to the beaches and get honest to god tans. However, you will see almost no one in the water....too cold!

If you want to play in the water, rent a full body wetsuit at any surf shop that rents wetsuits, then grab yourself a boogie board and play with that on the waves for hours at a time. Guaranteed good times; you'll be able to maintain comfortable body temperatures. Just cause you can go in the water in Dec doesn't mean you should do it without a wetsuit!

The water is cold, to cold to go swimming without a wetsuit. It should be warm enough to walk with swimsuit on and LaJolla or Coronado are the very nicest beaches. Have fun and don't forget the sunblock.

uh well i live in san diego, and if your gonna be here in the winter, you might want to bring a swimsuit, but i doubt it will even be warm enough. you can swim if you want to, but it might be cold. also, the weather here hasnt been great lately, well today it was pretty good. it might rain, so bring jackets. usually its sunny during the day though. and know, you wont be able to tan.
