y = mx + c is equation of a straight line.
y = - 5x - 5 is also.
Thus IS LINEAR. ( note that x is to power 1)

It is because, the graph is a straight line with a constant slope , -5. If it were quadratic, or whatever else, the slope would be a function of x.
