I want a true "Reagan" conservative, but like many, am worried about electability. What's your take? And if a more liberal Republican gets the nomination, how will you vote?

Oh, please tell me why you support one candidate over the others. I have my leanings, but like many am not 100% sold on one.

1americangirl...I love everything I hear from him, but therein lies the problem...we don't hear much from him. He's in the lead as far as principles go for me, though. I just need to see some fire from him. I loved his line about protecting the next generation from his generation. Boy, ain't that the truth!

Rick K,
Please explain. I've heard that he didn't run against her in the Senate because he wouldn't have had a chance. (Maybe because of NY voters vs. the entire nation? ) Then on the other hand, while I agree he is better than Hillary, there WILL BE some that will stay home because they can't vote for his social agenda in good conscience. I agree that some is better than none, but not everyone does.

JR4NOTAXES,
I completely agree with your line of thinking. Love Hunter, but he isn't very well known. Huckabee is o.k., but has his issues, although his pro-life stance tends to outweigh them. But still....I've heard, "Hucka-who?" So, who IS your top choice? Sounds like you're in a bit of a quandry like so many. Ergo, my question on YA!

Huckabee and Hunter are the two most pro-life candidates that are for a pro-life amendment to the Constitution. This is critical since simply reversing Roe v. Wade will make it legal to kill babies in some states but not in others. But Hunter doesn't have the executive experience that Huckabee has.

Huckabee and Romney have the executive experience as Governor of AR and MA, respectively. But Romney has a mixed (at best) record on conservative issues, not the least of which is abortion. Therefore, Huckabee is THE top pick for the Republican nomination.

And, while the pundits are praising the rise in the polls of Huckabee right now, they will surely try to bring him down later. Actually, this is good; they tried to do the same thing with Reagan, and the more they tried the more they failed. Even after Reagan got elected, he was underestimated and thought to be a one termer.

Finally, to answer your "liberal Republican" question, it would depend on two things: how they would offset their liberal positions, and who the Democrat nominee was. First, if they offset a couple of liberal leanings by assuring us that they'll appoint only "strict constructionists" (like Scalia) to the Supreme Court, then that is a MAJOR step in the right direction. (Note: Scalia actually subscribes to "originalism" which is faithful to the actual text of the Constitution in its historical context). Secondly, if Hillary was the Democrat nominee, her "fatal flaws" -- such as advocating for vetoing the partial-birth abortion ban, confiscating oil company profits for health care, etc. -- will assure a prospective liberal Republican nominee my vote in the general election.

But again, despite my potential support for a liberal Republican that would appoint strict constructionists to the Supreme Court, voters must not be fooled into thinking such as person would be the only electable Republican. Far from it - there are no guarantees for victory, but more often than not abandoning socially conservative candidates is an assured road to defeat.

I'm old school Conservative and we don't have many choices. Our worst choice is Rudy, but Thompson, Huck and McCain are so-so. Ron Paul takes it back to our roots, the Republican beliefs before the right wing Christan nuts took over. So I have to say Ron, even though I can't always agree with him.

No. Romney lost very last time to McCain --- John McCain!? How can anybody lose to McCain??? Romney's version of ObamaCare will stick with him round like a lead weight. Perry has made some gaffs, yet he's not any longer out-of-the-operating yet. also, i imagine we are able to not have considered the genuine chief this early.

This is the bottom line. We have to defeat Hillary. The Republican best equipped to defeat her is Rudy Giulliani.

I would love to have a true "Reagan" conservative, but they're few and far between. And if you define another of the candidates as one, and support them because of it, you risk putting Hillary in the White House.

With Giulliani, you may not be getting everything you want. But if Hillary wins, you get nothing that you want.

Don't play the "If I can't have everything the way I want it, I'm gonna take my ball and go home!" game. Take what you can get, or you'll get nothing.

Vote for Rudy!

EDIT: Rudy did run against Hillary for the Senate in 2000, but he was forced to withdraw due to health reasons. He was replaced on the ballot by Rick Lazio, and Hillary at him for lunch. I think Rudy would've beaten Hillary then, and I think he'll beat her in 2008!

Great question!

Vote for Rudy!

I believe Ron Paul is not only the best Republican candidate, but one of the greatest men of our era. He truly understands what liberty means and will try his best to restore it!

I'm afraid if you want "electability"- you're gonna have to pick among the Democrats... ALL the Republican Candidates have "fatal flaws" as far as living up to the Reagan standard- OR electability. I'm afraid that after almost 8 years of Bush, people can "see through" any Republican that isn't "the Real McCoy..." :(
