I have a gas forced electric ignition furnace. I have noticed when the temp out side is above 40 my furnace works great. Once it drops in the 30's outside my furnace will kick on, the fan will start but then kicks off. I have to manually go to the termostate and lower the temp before the furnace kicks back on. I had someone check it they said my batteries were dead in the thermostate..well they were brand new batteries. It has been doing this for the past couple of weeks. Any suggestions would be great.

You could have a bad limit switch or a bad igniter

1. Does the blower run once the furnance heats up ? If not check the fan belt, or call a repair man to replace blower motor. Another test is to switch the thermostat to FAN ONLY to see if fan runs, but if you dont know that this worked before it may be miss leading. 2. New furnaces have an electronic brain that onlya tech can check. "No User Serviceable Parts Inside" 2.

It is very uncommon for thermostats to go bad. It almost sounds like a limit switch problem.

I am betting that when the temp drops outside your furnace needs to run more often. It probably has less time to cool down between run times.

It is possible though that the thermostat has gone goofy.

Check the voltage on the batteries. Just because they are new, doesn't mean a thing!
