I have all my storage figured out...I don't need a player to store the music. Just something to plug the flash drive INTO, that provides a way to read the files, buttons and screen to choose songs, and a jack for my earphones or speakers.

I have a laptop, and an appliance for my car. I want something to take, say, on a walk.

Is there such a thing?

Yes, there are. I have seen FM transmitter things on Ebay which use USB drives as the source of the music. These things do not have memory, but use the USB flash drive as the memory. I have also seen devices which use a SD/MMC cards as the memory for the tunes played. I have a MP3 player which has 64mb internal memory, a FM radio and uses the SD/MMC card for storage in addition to the internal memory. I have added a 1gb memory card and get hours of music from the card when I am in a place where the FM radio part does not get a signal.
