ideally, to tell the public what's happening in society that's important, and effects the lives of the average citizens.

For me, media's roles in our society is one, to serve as watchdogs. Meaning, to watch and observe and report to the public things that are relevant to our daily living. Also, they serve as providers of information that we deem aren't necessary but in reality, are relevant to us.
