Example of diffusion: Take a glass of water and set it on the table and wait for the water to stop moving. gently place one drop of dye in the water. As it diffuses you can see the spread of the dye.

If there is a membrane involved then it is osmosis.

Osmosis is referred to water: movement of water through a semipermeable membrane towards a volume where a chemical spaces has a higher concentration of a chemical species. Diffusion is generally referred to any other chemical molecule movement from a higher concentration to a lower one, it doesn't matter if there is a membrane in between the two volumes. So osmosis is a type of diffusion, but diffusion is not necessarily osmosis.

if theres a high concentration of a substance on one side of a membrane and a low concentration on the other the substance will flow from the high side to the low side till the concentration is the same on both sides - thats diffusion

osmosis is when the water diffuses

just remember diffusion and osmosis do not require energy this is called passive transport
