why is there 9 judges in canada? why such an odd number?

The number of seats on the Canadian Supreme Court began at six. It was increased to seven in 1927 after a number of tie votes, and to the current value of nine in 1949. The value is odd to prevent ties. Why nine? The cited articles don't say.

That way there can be no ties. It is why the US Supreme Court has 9 judges and every US District Court has 3. With a odd number of judges you ensure no ties.
