The bible is not particularly eloquent, nor does it communicate clearly, nor does it make me care about its characters. Meanwhile, I can think of a dozen writers right off that accomplish all of the above.

God didn't write it. It was written by men who heard stories of interaction between God and man. Shakespeare could have written it probably better because he is a brilliant writer.

And it is still the #1 selling book of all time. . .

The bible is actually as told to men by God. It is told of the happenings, and the "history" of man. The reason the grammar is so rough and it is hard to follow is that it's orginal writing was done in a very old Latin, and not many know the true translation. And it has been written by numerous individuals over the centuries and it is no longer known the original words. Not to mention the rules of our grammar are not the same as other countries, so depending upon which part of the world the writing happened, things get lost in translation.

The purpose of the bible was to relate happenings - not tell a story. So if you look at it more like a historical document rather than a piece of literature, you might understand things a bit more.

Because Willy Shake wrote so clearly, in a language that is easy to inderstand, right? Please

I also think you may be a bit confussed by the fact that the bible is considered the "word" of God and not written by God. I may be wrong, but I don't think God actually wrote much at all. You need to take up issue with Job and Matthew, not necassarily the subject they wrote about in the Old Testament.

Have you ever studied it? Just the first few words alone when looked at in original text are stunning. There is imagery, poetry, foreshadowing...pain, love, lust, betrayal, honor... Maybe if you look at it as The Bible you bring your prejudice into it?

Anytime something has been translated from the original text, it loses a little.

Besides, how can Ezekiel 23:20 not be interesting?

The bible wasn't written by "God". People wrote it, perhaps inspired by their love of God. You can tell it was written for very simple illiterate people because it is so repetitive, as in an oral tradition. It was written by multiple people over an expanse of time, and has been edited, changed, censored and no doubt parts of it even lost.

The Bible does have some good writing but it has to be read as metaphor, not literally.

Your question would be more on-target if you were questioning the Koran, not the Bible.

The Bible was never represented as having been written by God. These are stories about God, Jesus, the Apostles, etc., and not actually written by divine intervention. The closest it comes to being "authored" by God is that many passages quote Jesus, who is represented as the son of God.

However, the Koran, that stupifyingly incoherent, messy jumble that is an editor's nightmare is supposedly the actual word of Allah. The Koran is presented as a record of the exact words revealed by Allah via the Angel Gabriel to Muhammad.

Because the bible was meant to teach mankind a belief and ideal, not to entertain you. It's like saying that law books aren't entertaining.... well, of course they're not. You're suppose to read these books and reflect on their ideals, not get a chuckle....

I think Shakespeare had a different goal in mind when he wrote Romeo and Juliet.
