Algebra does not just involve a set of rules defined over a field. The study of Algebra to mathematicians is the study of objects such as Groups, Rings, Fields, Modules, and Monoids as its basic objects.

There are also objects that are called algebras. An example of one is a sigma-algebra which is used in measure theory.
