A "so called" real gamer is someone that has a passion for and loves video games. You do not need skill, or to be the best to be a real gamer. Although people that are serious gamers build up their level of skill and are usually real good at them anyways so I guess it can have some to do with being a real gamer.
A real gamer takes pride when playing and or beating the game and dose the best they can through each Level/Chapter of the games. They play to fully beat the game 100%. If possable, by finding all hidden/secret stuff to the game, or a high score set ,or whatever the game contains.
Real gamers can devote there life to video games and play for hours daily about, or over 5 hours and useully play a wide range of platfourms, If it be Action, Adventure, Sports, Fighting, Stradagy, Shooters, RPG and so on. Real gamers have a lot of knowlage on video games and always look to better their playing style and always figure out how to improve playing.
Real gamers do it all on their own with out cheats or help because that is the whole point of gameing is to figure it out to move on to the next stage. Looking at a players guide is just a short cut to beat the game and I think that if you are a "real" true die hard gamer you want enjoy every part and second of the game to complete it by your self. Do not get me started on Cheats/Hacks. Real gamers want the challage with out all that stuff
If available meny gamers enter into compete in compatitions againced eachother for fun to see if they can be one of the top gamers in actual gameing events. Not talking about game clans or just playing online at home, but you do not have to do that to be a real gamer just was something I wanted to add that a real gamer might be interested in doing and want to do.
I am sure I missed out on a lot but I feel I have covered quite a bit so I will leave it at that for now.

To be a real gamer you must first off never give up. If you've been stuck on a level or mission for a few days, don't give up so easily. It may take long, but soon you'll understand what to do and master it.
Also only if you desperatly have to use a guide. I don't recmoned it though, and I NEVER recomend cheating. It ruins the fun of the game. It feels good to get something done right without cheating or using a guide.
A real gamer never trys to hurry through levels, (unless your being timed) you have to try and find every little thing. Every secret or gun, or mushroom, w/e on that level. If you can do that threw a whole game you've mastered the game.
A real gamer never looks down on other games. If your a Halo fan don't diss Mario, other people like his games because thats their genre. Same go's the other way around.
Finally try new games, if your used to animated 2D games, try a racing game or 1st person shooting game, experiment with all genres to see what there like. A real gamer can do everything listed above.

Okay here's my definition of how to be a "real" gamer:
I'm a pro gamer. Which means I'm a competitive gamer who respects other players/gamers who have the REAL skillz playing a certain game while I'm having myself a good/fun time playing the game. Especially FPS video games online. I DO NOT respect a gamer who cheats online. Cheating in an non-online game is nothing but cheating online is where I don't respect them at all and proves they don't have the skillz even if they have the skillz and do cheat, I still don't respect them. Other than that, I've been playing games since I was 5 years old. A real gamer is a gamer who can beat a single player game WITHOUT a game guide or a user-created walkthrough from the internet or getting hints. Just playing the game and figuring things out on their own, without any help. A real gamer is a gamer who plays lots and lots of different games. From handheld to consoles to computers. Any kind of games they can get their hands on for their own enjoyment on playing a video game. A real gamer who can beat games without any problem. A "real" gamer who dedicate their lives on video gaming.
But there are different types of gamers out there. From gamers who only play for fun to gamers who play dead serious for competition, to be the best. A real gamer who can play games without reading the damn instructional manual book that came with the game.
To be a "real" gamer is to have great knowledge about video games and the video games industry and of course plays a lot of different games on any type of platform. Ex: PC, PS2, Xbox. Xbox 360, PS3, Gameboy, Wii, etc.

I have been a gamer for years and believe a "real" gamer does it for fun and never loses focus. I don't like gaming if people get competitive on me. BUT that's just my opinion. I think being a "real" anything is all in how you see it.

I've heard several definitions of what people consider a "real gamer" to be but I have my own definition of it.
Some people say to be a real gamer you have play all or most of the game consoles and have respect for all consoles and not be a "fanboy" toward one console.
I think that a gamer can be a "fanboy" of one particular game console. But my personal opinion of a "real" gamer is someone that play's games that may not always be mainstream games like Shadow of the Colossus and Ico because game like this are the most unique games ever made. No offense to anyone, but but to me a real gamer doesn't play games like Madden. But of course, I think that a real gamer coud be someone that plays mainstream games like God of War, Metal Gear Solid, and Jak and Daxter because I play games like this.
But I also think that a gamer is someone that plays a game on all of the difficulties, and achieves to unlock all of the secrets and achievments in a game without codes and walkthroughs.

master the game of your choice. play many times doing the same thing, aknowledging the arch of a grenade or how fast you run or exactly where you need to jump to land on something. master games that you enjoy, just practice and practice and practice, and have a love for games of all kinds, old and new. being good is not enough to be a real gamer, you must appreciate games from duck hunt to mass effect to super mario world to halo, old zelda to new zelda, racing to shooting. have a love for gaming, that is the key

A "real" gamer to me is someone who can just pick up a game and play it like they've played it for hours. Trust me, when you meet a "real" gamer, they'll probably beat you at your own game. I know a couple of people like this and they make me sick : P.
