Ok, both of these scenarios are unlikely, but if you love baseball, batting .500 will get you some fat cash before 2000 HR. You will strike out a lot more getting 100 HR, and if you get on base 1 out of 2 plate apperances??? Batting .500 is clearly the better option. 25% of those could be yard balls.

The HR king. The numbers there are so much better than anything anyone has really hit for average as to make them worth drooling over. 500 is only about 1/3 better than Ty Cobb really hit; 100 HR a year is at least twice as good as anyone's average season. Also, the HR king would automatically have 100 runs and 100 RBI. You might also get walked just a tiny bit, so your OBP wouldn't be too shabby.
Oh, and the idea that average will automatically equal wins is flawed. Williams hit 406 in 41--they didn't win. Cobb hit 400 three times without a WS crown. Same for Hornsby, Joe Jackson in 1908, Bill Terry in 300, etc. 400 isn't 500, but lots and lots of singles are not really better than lots of home runs with automatic runs scored.

I think people remember hitters who hit the long ball more than those who hit for average.
Granted Tony Gwinn was never a power hitter and hit for average throughout his career, but I think fans remember hitters who hit the long ball.
So I'd rather be a HR King.

If I hit one hundred homers in 600 at-bats each and every season, even without different hits, i'm slugging .667 -- the writers could have issues each and every fall justifying the two voting, or no longer voting, for me for MVP, because of the fact i'm additionally batting .167. Plus everybody is confident i'm on roids, nonetheless my staggering and unique means is in reaction to stable foodstuff, clever workout, sound sleep, legal maple bats, and each and every day prayer. yet none of that makes for stimulating sound bites. one hundred+ HR guy makes lotsa munny. great-singles guy, although, places up with lots much less BS.

I'd like to be behind home plate, no more than 15 rows back, on the third base line, with a Polish in one hand and an icy cold beer in the other.
Oh, and as long as we're wishing: Wrigley Field, day game, temps in the mid to upper 70's, Humidity low, Cubbies ahead of the %#&@! Dodgers 13-2, top of the ninth, 2 outs, nobody on, the count is 3 balls, 2 strikes and Harry is calling the game.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh...schweet.

HR King because something about them is HOT! (I'm a lady)
Also they are more exciting and fun to watch and not as common, I mean we all have our Mauer's, Granderson's and Jeter's; but it's hard to find a slugger!

average, because i would be getting on base and scoring runs, and that means my team is winnning. Barry hit like 73 one year and did'nt win anything except a trophy.

Babe Ruth said all those years ago that guys with good averages drive new cars. Home run hitters drive new Cadillacs. Home run hitter for me without a doubt.
