'Cool' and 'Hot' both are terms used to signify a deviation from the normal. So when you say something or someone is 'cool' or 'hot' it means that there is something different (or exciting) abt that thing or person. Got it? They can be used interchangeably, although I also partly agree with one of the previous answers which says that these terms allude to different contexts. The effect they result in is the same. I always say something is cool if it is deviating from usual norms and I prefer using hot if something arouses my interest. Just use the word. Why spend so much time thinking about it, eh?

They really don't in principal

When you talk about someone being cool, you are usually referring to the way they "act"

When you talk about someone being hot, it's usually the way they "look"

Even describing something like a musical band the connotations are different. A cool band you may like. A hot band you may love.

They may be used interchangeably, but I personally feel they denote a different level of meaning.

I don't think they do.

When something is hot, it means that it's popular.
e.g. "This song is hot!" "This website is hot".
Or beautiful looking.
e.g. "She's hot!"

Cool is a bit harder do define, but it generally refers to the "awesomeness" or "novelty" of something.

Something can be cool (i.e. awesome) without being hot (popular or well known).

Many songs i know fall into this category...
