Gandalf the wizard pressured him into it.

He pretty much was tricked into it, though the inclination/desire was there somewhat to begin with. First Gandalf came by and in the course of conversation got Bilbo to invite him to tea the next day. Gandalf then invited Thorin and company to come with him and they spent the rest of the afternoon and evening talking about previous adventures and the quest for the Lonely Mountain and the treasure there. During this time Bilbo began feeling the desire for something different, something out-of-the-ordinary, much stronger and ended up agreeing to go with the dwarves. The next morning he woke up thinking it was just a dream, until Gandalf came by and shooed him out the door and down the road. The rest is the story....

Like Hawkeye become an Army doctor: he was drafted.

Gandalf first invites him to join Thorin's expedition, but Bilbo declines. However, Gandalf scratches a sign on his door that means that Bilbo is a "Thief of Fortune", the dwarves coming calling and wake up Bilbo's sense of adventure and his pride, and then there's no turning back.
