You don't need an FTP server to publish your Web site. You need a way to upload files to your Web server, and the most common way to do that is via FTP.

Since you do not name your Web host or the software you used to create the site, it is difficult to answer directly how to post your Web site to the Web. Thus, I cannot give step-by-step instructions.

Ask your question a second time. Name the software you used to create the site and the name of your Web host. With that information, you will get better answers.

Apologies for the previous answers that did not read all the text of your question. The headline is misleading because you don't need an FTP server, you just need to upload your Web site to your Web server via FTP. There's a huge difference.

The problem is you didn't give us much to go on, and what you described is all wrong.

It sounds like you need some space to PUT your website so other people can see it. Well, the question is where? Some websites will let you upload via FTP, that means they are the server, you just connect to it and upload to it. And they would have given you instructions on how to do that.

(For example, here's Geocities's FTP instructions, but it's NOT available with the free plan
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/geocities/gftp/gftp-09.html )

What you need is a "web host", and you need to figure out who are you going to use that is free. Then that place would have instructions on how to get your content onto their server.

Thats a great question, i would even like to see something step-by-step..

all ive heard is that you will need a dedicated computer for this and a certain FTP program, which typicaly costs money. You will also need to check with your ISP about your bandwith limit. most companies only allow you to have a certain amount per month, and if you go over it, they can terminate your account with no notice. so even if you do get a step-by-step, be sure to contact your ISP and ask them your limits. Beleive it of not, Comcast, My ISP, would not answer that simple question. There is no where in the contract that states any limit either.. so if you do run into that issue, youll have to dig for it.

Sorry about not giving a direct answer though...

WELL, if you are using GoDaddy, time for a change.
Get an old(i386 or above) box with about 256MB of RAM, then set it up in ur house on battery backup. Get the Linux distro Ubuntu, install it on the computer, then run this in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install apache2
sudo apt-get install proftpd
sudo apt-get apache2-common
sudo nano /etc/apache2/apache2.conf
(edit to your desire)
sudo nano /etc/proftpd/*.conf
(edit again, following instructions)
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
sudo /etc/init.d/proftpd restart
then get a domain name from godaddy.com or elsewhere, register it, then "point" the DNS to your ip address(whatismyip.com).

AND BOOM! your own webserver, and ftp server, just dont cut the computer running linux off or they will magically disappear...

you could get a web host, but having a web/ftp server with linux is cheaper(no monthly fees, and all software is free!)

You must select a web hosting company, free or pay, to host your web site. They will supply you with the FTP server, it's address, and the user / pass to access it.
Here is a list of free web hosts to get you started.
