I have a '98 explorer and the gauge says it's just below the midpoint, but it's just how the gauge is, seriously. My battery is perfect and I did an alternator test at my tech school, it's good. You probably never noticed it before, but that's how the exploders are.

If the gauge is low, it means the charging system is not putting out the correct voltage. That is PROBALY an alternator problem, which can mean tighten or replace the belt or replace or rebuild the alternator.
Why guess? Go to Auto Zone or someone like that. Almost all of them will check the system for you and it only takes a few minutes.

It is most likely not getting re-charged as it should. It could possibly be an electrical short but that is not likely , more likely that your alternator is not re-charging properly. Yes it could be a loose or worn belt , check that first. Most any parts shop can easily and quickly check to see if your car's system is charging properly and usually do when you purchase a battery IF you have them install it. One thing sounds sure. Until you fix the re-charging issue , no battery will keep up a charge for long. Good luck.

When you purchased the new battery how long was it on the shelf? It is possible that it was not fully charged when you installed it. Drive it around a bit before going to a lot of trouble yet. If the problem get worse check you belts, Have the alternator checked. But my best guess it is just fine.

What do you mean by low? If you are asking what I think you are asking though, it is more than likely the alternator on its way out. If the explorer doesn't have a serpentine belt, then it could be a loose belt, or the tensioner is wearing out and not keeping the belt tight

The battery gauge is somewhat misleading, it measures the health of your charging system, NOT the battery. Yes, check the alternator and all charging related stuff.

Its possible that the battery was just low when you bought it. But, just to be sure, drive the car to an autoparts store, like Autozone, and have them do a Charging sytem check for you. They can pinpoint exactly what is wrong.
Also, make sure that both battery connections are good and tight.
