Accurate as in to the book or the uniforms and equipment? Either way a movie will never be like the book. The movie does follow the stories of those who raised the flag. The uniforms and equipment used in the movie is accurate to the time and place. They even filmed in a location that looked simular to Iwo Jima. They filmed in Iceland and I believe they did some on Iwo itself. Since this film was honoring those men who gave their life on that island, everything was done to make sure it was done right. Clint Eastwood wouldn't do anything to dishonor the Marines who died there.

The movie is not as accurate as the book. But in general, it is accurate. Be careful though with reading the book, the man who wrote it is the son of one of the flag raisers not one himself. Many things are second hand accounts.

It seems to follow the book pretty close, however, the book is better. Most any "war story" can be too true to believe unless you have been there. Combat is a horror that no one wants to experience.

The men that were there told the story, like "Band of Brothers"
