Adelaide is relatively close to the desert. Not a good idea in January, but towards the end of your stay head north and experience the outback..

Adelaide has a population of around 1.2 million people, smaller than other capital cities such as Sydney or Melbourne. If you're coming to Adelaide in January, it will be the middle of summer here, so temperatures will be between 27 C to up to 40 C (80-104 F).
Being 14 years old, you will probably want to head into the city centre, especially Rundle Mall if you like shopping. Also, beaches such as Glenelg with its many many shops and great teenage atmosphere may be of interest.
There are a lot of young people in Adelaide, all very friendly. If you will be attending school here I think you will find it very easy to settle in; Australian schoolchildren are very easygoing and tolerant of newcomers. Sport is also a large part of South Australian culture, such as AFL, cricket and basketball, so you should definitely try to catch a game or two while you are here.

Adelaide is a beautiful city, there are hundreds of wonderful sights, and I can guarantee you will enjoy your time here.

for a 14yo...i think adelaide will be very boring for you. there isnt much entertainment.
but since its january...it'll be mid-summer, so the beach may be fun, but it will be packed! the shopping is alright, but there arent many places for you to shop though. There is Harbour Town, Rundle Mall, Marion, TTP and Norwook..i suppose.
Adelaide is very quiet, so if you are looking to relax, Adelaide is perfect for you! There are lots of parks and greenery, so u can enjoy the peacefulness. The population is very multicultural, nice and simple.
