In the marriage vows, what does the phrase "till death do us part" or "as long as we both shall live mean"?

The question should be why does no one keep their vows if they made vows "until death do us part".

I think someone should have explained this to you before you took the vows (assuming the question is about you). But all in all it is confirmeing that you will not have eyes for anyone else and are vowing that only death wil be able to brake that vow. The second part.."As long as we both should live" it's more serious. This implies hard work, fidelity, honesty, integrity for a long, long, long time. That is the type of committment that a lot of these folks answering ramdomly your question, have a hard time understanding.

It means that the only way that your marriage would no longer be valid is when one of you passes. That is where upon death you will part. The same is true for "as long as we both shall live." As long as you both are alive, your marriage vows are valid in the eyes of God.

It means once you die, your vows end. The surviving spouse is free to marry and it is not considered cheating. (You think that's a given, there are cultures where the living spouse is expected to stay single or die with you.) And once you die your souls are no longer connected. Once you die, you start the next phase of your journey, without your spouse.

It means until one of you dies and to be together as long as both are alive and well .You don't have to say those traditional vows both of you can write your own.Good Luck !

Considering the number of marriages that end in divorce, one could conclude it means nothing at all.

It means you cannot push your spouse over a cliff just to be with the person you are cheating with. HAHAHA

You forgot about the silent part: or "until we can't stand each other any more".

They don't say that out loud at the wedding ceremony, but it is there if you listen very closely.
