For the most part you can either take the SAT or the ACT. Some colleges have stopped accepting the SAT so I would take the ACT, it is also easier

Most colleges require it, yes. There are some exceptions; I know a school my friend is hoping to go to doesnt need SAT scores. Its an art college.

I believe you'll still need the SATs to go to a Canadian university as well, I'm sure they have a test that demonstrates ability just like the SATs.

Not all universities require you to take the SATs. Some don't look at that, and others require you to take the ACT test. Some let you take either the SAT or ACT.

In Canada, there is no standardized test.

Not for an American, and i am assuming not for a Canadian. it helps, they use it as a guideline kind of, but if you have a strong essay, good grades, good references, then you should be good. A few friends and I protested the SAT's, and while I am taking time off, three of my friends got into very good colleges

Actually there are some U.S. schools (albeit smaller, less prestigious schools) that don't require SAT tests. Check out collegeboard.com, and do a search on a college, then click on the "admissions" tab and scroll down to see if it says "SAT Reasoning Not Required."

I don't know about Canadian schools, though, sorry!

I think so... but I think a lot of the decision comes from the dean and the acceptance comitee at a college... they look over your SAT scores and determine whether they think you are good enough to come. If they really wanted to I think they could accept someone with no SAT's.

I took both, and applied to every college I thought I may want to attend. SAT is accepted by everyone, ACT is more select - check before you commit - research the schools and their entry requirements. Good luck!

I don't know about Canada, but in the U.S. there are more schools that will now accept ACT scores (as well as, or instead of SATs) and many that are now "test optional" (ie you don't HAVE to submit any scores.) For the latter, see:

www.fairtest.org

(The majority of schools in the U.S. want some standardized test scores...)
