I always thought that you were supposed to disconnect the positive but that just leaves the grounded negative attached. Wouldn't this drain the battery even more?

ALWAYS!ALWAYS!ALWAYS! Disconnect Earth first, and reattach last. This prevents accidental shorts to the body of vehicle and possibly igniting vapours from the Battery.

Either as you open the circuit, like turning a light switch off. Normally when I disconnect a battery I do the ground first. This way if you accidentally touch your wrench to metal/ground when disconnecting the Positive you not spark anything.
So, in my case I would disconnect the ground.

I would go with the postive. Leaving the negative on will not make a difference. But the battery will slowly drain over a long period of time.
