I was offered a 2001 Camaro SS with 194k Miles for 7500. I assume the engine is still good for a few more miles since its reached so many already but aside from checking the engine with a mechanic what else would be advised? A 2001 SS with 50-90k miles can go for $16-$18k. I figure its still a great buy even if I have to replace the engine in 2-3 years.

Any thoughts? Should I just pass this one up?
Thanks

Buy that car, there is an LS1 under the hood, and its the ss package with better suspension. The LS1 is a very good motor and the easiest motor to get 1000 hp out of. I would buy that car tonight.

OK, two things going on here- 1) the emotional allure of a hot car and 2) the financial decision.

Let's do the latter- a car is comprised of three "parts" - the inside, the outside and the running gear. If you get a car with trouble in one part, it *might* be worth saving. Two or more make it less economically viable.

To determine whether this car has life left (something no one can do online), try this approach- tell the seller you will pay for half the cost of a diagnosis if you buy. If not, he pays the whole thing. Then take it to a diagnostic shop for a complete check. Compression (hard to tell by looking), running gear, brakes, etc. You can see for yourself what the interior and paint look like. If the diagnosis comes back favorable, then buy the car. If not, you're only out some time.

Now for the first part. You can't put a price on something you want. It's like asking, "How much for my kids?" If you like this car, if you've always wanted this car, then the price isn't important. If you just want an investment, look for a car that has no depreciation. I'm not harsh, I'm trying to be honest with you. If you really want this car, go ahead and spend the money because it's not about the resale of the car, it's about what YOU are worth.

Talk about oranges when the subject is oranges and talk about apples when the subject is apples. But don't confuse what you want with what you pay for. Not in this case. Good luck

It totally depends on what you are buying this car for. Are you buying this car to be your "fun" car to drive on the weekend or take to the track? If this is the case then buy it. Just check out the blue book price first, 7500 is a lot. I live in Arizona and 01 SS camaros here with only 70k miles are going for around $12,000 in the auto trader so 7500 seems a little steep. If you are buying this car for your sole means of transportation then deffinately dont buy it. Do your self a favor and look at consumer reports. The 2001 camaros have a horrible reliability record. They have a "used car verdict" of "worse then average" and they recieve a "much worse then average"rating for the reliability of their drive system, exhaust, paint, body integrity, and power equipement. They also recieved "worse then average" reliabiltiy ratings for their transmission and brakes. So if this is your daily driver, pass on it.

id say go with it... theres an ls1 in that car, if you didnt know, its the same engine used in the corvettes from that year, so if worst comes to worst you can rebuild the engine. but you should be good for another 75-100,000 miles, chevy engines are really reliable. i own an impala that had over 300,000 miles on the engine before it started knocking. plus, where are you gonna find an 01 camaro SS for $7,500?

Its worth a maximum of $1500 cause it moves. A junk yard would never pay that for the car. No dealer would take it. Its engine is near death due to miles.

If the owner says 1500 is crazy, then tell him to part it out. Only way money would be made off it.

I would buy it, it would be a good investment, there were only 6,332 which by todays standards makes it a very collectable car. You couldn't go wrong at all.

pass it up, you'll have to spend money for a new engine soon but who knows how much longer that stock 10 bolt rear end is gonna last. way too many problems, overall its your typical low quality american car.
