Looks like it's 27-29 ounces or 3 1/2 cups.

Well, normally when they refer to a can, it means the number of ounces in the can. But 2.5 ounces would be a very small can. I would say it does mean 2 1/2 cups. If that makes sense relative to the rest of the ingredients, I would slowly add that and do a taste test along the way to make sure it's not too much.

here's a dish I used to make before I quit eating meat and everyone loved it. It's similar to shepherds pie... Hamburger Pie brown about 1 lb ground beef, drain Add 1 can drained green beans (I like the french cut ones) and 1 can campbells tomato soup (don't add the water) to the ground beef and spread the mixture into a casserole dish. Then layer mashes potatoes on top about an inch or two thick and top them with a handful of shredded cheddar cheese. Heat in the oven for about 20 or 30 min, until heated through. It's not an exact recipe and you can tweak it a bit here and there. I used garlic mashed potatoes and added some jalapenos to the ground beef when I browned it.

I'm going out on a limb here and saying "2.5 can" = 2 1/2 cans of tomatoes-- the 15 ounce cans.
I love tomatoes so I would use 3 cans so I wouldn't have any waste.
What are you making? :))) The amount would be relative to that.
OOPS!!!!....After reading other answers I realize that it IS the can size.
Guess I'm off to dangle from that "limb".............. ;)

I know cans used to have numbers pertaining to their size, but I can't remember what the sizes are. I do think a 2.5 can means the big can ( 28 ounces ).

I remember the term. 2.5 was the size of the can, not in ounces or cups. I'm not sure, but I think it may be a regular sized can, like the 14.5 ounce sized can,

I agree with juju because the big cans were all that used to be available in the stores. What delicious stuff are you making now? I want some?
