A crankshaft journal does provide a surface for either a connecting rod bearing or a main bearing. This is refered to as the lower end.

No. Crankshaft journals are set into the engine block to support and lubricate the crankshaft.The big end bearing shells are held within the big end housings to support and lubricate the piston rods.
