My parents are divorced and I'm estranged from my dad, so I don't know so much about him. My mom said she attended college but dropped out before earning her degree. Does that make me a first generation student? I know that some of the colleges I'm applying to takes this into consideration during their application process, but I don't want to say something without knowing what it means for sure and end up jeopardizing my chances and be considered "dishonest." Please help. And please tell me how sure you are of the answer.

You can say "I hope to be the first in my family to complete college," but you can't say "I'm the first to attend college." I don't think you need to explain in great detail that you are sure of your father. And yes, it could make a difference--depends on the school. I'm very sure of this answer.
