I have a new coworker who is a dancer. I don't really understand the whole semipro ballet/jazz dancer stuff. Sometimes I feel like I'm walking on eggshells in conversation, Im very scientific. Any tips on what is cool/uncool with dancers, just trying to make this work.

It is cool when people like to know more about dancing. Even if you're a scientist you don't have to be superior to everyone around you in every possible aspect of the knowledge. It's OK to not know and to ask. I wonder why do you feel like walking on eggshells. As long as you're not stereotyping all female dancers as anorexic and all male dancers as gay and all of them in general as financially uncapable and emotionally unstabe you should be fine. Also avoid that retarded joke that white people can't dance. Other than that - general rules apply. You don't ask a woman how much does she weigh or how old is she.

I'm not sure what you're line of work is, but it sounds like this person is working with you to make ends meet. Many dancers cannot support themselves on a dancing salary. This probably is causing some tension in his/her life, so be sympathetic. Also, try asking him/nher about his/her favorite dance movie, musical, dancer, style of dance, or music. This could help ease up the mood and maybe even form a friendship. It is said that opposites attract! Hope I helped ( :
