i looked it up and found on wikipedia that there isn't any evidence saying that it complicates things.. it just says to take them out while breastfeeding because one of the barbell balls could come off and lodge in the baby's throat (how horrible!!) but i'm a lot smarter than that anyways..

i guess my question is for anyone who has their nipples pierced who did experience complications.. or other way around! if you have them pierced and did not experience complications.. thanks :)

After our daughter was born, I had met a woman in the hospital who was having a really hard time with breastfeeding because she had one of her nipples pierced. The doctor felt that there was scar tissue there preventing the milk/colostrum from being expressed. I don't know what became of her because I was discharged the next day. I know the nurses were rushing about with the lactation specialists trying to get the baby to latch onto that breast and the baby would try and become frustrated. I met her in the nursery- I went to get our baby because they took her to draw blood and were gone forever.

This was only one person and it may have been the way that her piercing was done. I am not sure- but it's definately something I would disuss with your doctor.

So, talk to your doctor, do your research about breastfeeding now, and from there try it if you can.

Congrats to you!

Do Nipple Piercings Affect Breastfeeding

I had my nipples pierced and they had been taken out about 2 years before I breastfed. The only problem is that the milk came out the side of my nipples too (where the piercing hole is). Sometimes when my baby was nursing, she would have milk coming out of her mouth because it was coming out the side. It worked out fine though. Breastfeeding was hard, but the piercings had nothing to do with that.

I got my nipples pierced right before I met my now husband. We got pregnant quickly(whoopsie LOL), and I planned on BFing. I took my piercings out not too long into my pregnancy. I was able to nurse(not without problems, but none were caused by my piercings). I only nursed him for 6 weeks. But as of right now I am still nursing his 11 month old little brother. :-D

Congrats on your pregnancy.

Well, the piercing isn't going to make any difference, unless it wasn't done properly, or it didn't heal well - but obviously you'd need to take it out when you breast feed. Your breasts will often be tender and sore from breastfeeding, and you might get annoyed with putting your rings in and out again. Therefore they might even grow closed again because you'll just keep them off.

"milk ducts can be damaged or obstructed leading to lowered milk supply. Leaking milk from piercing holes, mastitis, reduced or extra sensitivity of the nipple, scar tissue, and development of allergies to the metal in the piercing have been reported."
