It's not actually as common as you might think. The most common teen suicide scenario is a big loss (or something the teen perceives as a big loss) - breakup with BF or GF is #1, fights with parents and/or parents not allowing them to do something, and failure in something the teen felt was VERY important. But it's not just that. They may have a background of being teased or being unpopular which leads to not having much "friend-based" support. So it's a combination. Teens tend to become "hopeless" more easily than adults simply because they don't have the experience to see that everything is changing all the time so whatever the "bad" situation is, it WILL change.
And also, just like the vast majority of adult suicides, the person was mostly ambivalent about death. I don't mean they're faking it or anything like that. It's just that they stopped caring about life and then, "Let's see what happens if I take 15 or these pills..." So that kind of impulsivity may kill you, may not...
I can tell you for sure that, while more girls attempt suicide, far more boys actually complete it.
Very sad....

Although the suicide rate among youth significantly decreased in the mid-1990s, suicide deaths remain high in the 15 to 24 age group with 3,971 suicides in 2001 and over 132,000 suicide attempts in 2002, making it the third leading cause of death for those aged 15 to 24 in the United States . In the United Kingdom, the suicide rate for males between 15 and 24 has risen consistently since 1989, while that for females in the same age group has remained largely static. However, given the overall decline in the suicide rate in the UK, the rise in suicide amongst the 15-24 male population has been a considerable cause for concern. More preventive measures have been taken in the last ten years, including increased understanding of the risk factors and causes and spreading information to schools and parents.
