Are you going to be renting a car in the US? The only company I know of that would rent without a credit card was Enterprise. We left them a cash deposit and that was sufficient. Whether they still have that policy or not I am not sure. If you give them a credit card for deposit you can still pay the final bill with cash and not have the charge go on your credit card, just tell them that up front. You should also make sure that before you leave the rental company has removed the "hold" placed on your credit card for the deposit amount.

Car rental comanies like credit cards because they know there is a source of funding to go after in case of minor damages, etc. If you can find a place that will rent you a car for cash don't be surprised if they ask for a very large deposit on the car ($500 to $1000).

good luck!

ps - It is one of the reasons that I still have credit cards!

Yes, assuming that he meets the age restrictions for renting a vehicle in California and has a valid drivers license and a credit card he can rent a vehicle without any problems. Canadian drivers licenses are accepted in the US and in other countries of the world just as the US drivers license is accepted in Canada and other countries.

Rental companies would prefer a credit card. You will at least have to leave a credit card imprint in case you owe more than originally anticipated.
