I believe this fad caught on because of a long-running skit on Saturday Night Live. I know David Spade was one of the usual characters. He and someone else would play flight attendants standing at the door of an airplane while the passengers filed out. They would say "buh-bye" in a snotty tone to each passenger and have some other witty remarks depending on what the passengers would say to them.

It was intended to make fun of flight attendants and other service people who are really insincere in their attitude toward their customers.

I think so many people saw the skit that a lot started saying "buh-bye" or "buh-bye now" for fun, and the catch phrase caught on with more and more people.

Saturday Night Live did an episode with Helen Hunt and David Spade playing flight attendants. As people were exiting the plane, they would say "buh-bye."

Another profound question that needs consideration is why "goodbye" isn't used that often. Think about it how often do you actually say "goodbye" rather then bye or buh-bye or see ya or catch you later.

Well, why worry! You probably use it yourself.
Let's face it, if you just say "Bye" it sounds as though you are leaving an undesirable situation. "Bye bye" is friendlier!
You mis- hear it as "buh".

It's just a dialect, a shorthand way of saying "Bye-bye."

I wouldn't worry too much about people that use hyphenated words, It's just a flaw in their personality.

They've seen the movie Airplane and it's funny.

Little kids learn to say it this way when first speaking.

The "buh" adds a little "UMPH!" Emphasis is power, dear. :)
