Let the numbers be x and y
By the problem,we get
x+y=16.....(1)
xy= -36....(2)
We know that
(x-y)^2
=(x+y)^2-4xy
=(16)^2-4(-36)
=256+144
=400
Thereforex-y=20 [square rooting both sides]
Now we have two equations
x+y=16,and
x-y=20
solving them we get
x=18 and y= -2
Therefore the numbers are 18 and -2

Although I'm not the first to answer, learning the way to do it is probably more important. If your numbers are x and y, you have:

xy = -36
x + y = 16

So x = 16-y
(16-y)y = -36, so y = 18 or -2. If y = 18, x =-2 (from the first equation), or if y=-2, x = 18 (from the first equation)
