That is for the populos to decide. It seems reasonable to be that by definition, the answer to your inquiry is no. A pure democracy the rights of the one are subject to the whim of the majority. America is a Representitive Democracy so the people are one step removed from these decisions but your question does not speak to our form of the democratic experiment.

I think your question is interesting but I think a furtherance of your question would provide more information. I would rephrase your question to ask "under what terms should a democratic society tolerate the individual?"

How far should the individual tolerate Society..........?

Judging the way that some defer to, revere and treat so-called Celebs (the Winehouses and coke snorting fools) as some form of religious icons ~ whilst 'paying' these celebs their salaries for the privilege of behaving like overgrown children in a Michael Jackson Neverland.......

Why should the individual defer to the form of Society which basically allows this to happen?

In answer to your actual question, surely, the Individual is 'Society.'

It is no measure of good health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.
Krishnamurti.

Maybe it is about time we all decided what our societal aims are - in order to find out where the agreements are. We are a democracy only in that we have a vote. I haven't had to pledge my allegiance to any aims and morals and wouldn't know what they were.

I work in a co-operative setting with individual responsibility and face to face democracy - that is my only society - I cant hack the wider one it is too individualistic and status driven -

I think Durkheim's anomie sums us up -disaffected.

I think our society is off the rails.

You are right, society seems to ignore the individual which is the root or foundation of the society, individually.

In Democracy, we are united in our separated ways, which explains my answers to you indirectly, where aims and morals are defined and nurtured in the leadership that was chosen.

There need to be some limits. An individual's rights shouldn't trample the rest of the peoples' rights. But, I feel we seem to be losing a lot of our individual rights in a way that scares me. I don't like it. The rights guaranteed by our constitution seem to be getting lost.

Who is qualified to decide what 'societal aims and morals' are?

Either it is decided by democratic will, or it is dicatatorship.

So your whole question becomes "do we all work together, or do little groups compete to impose their will on everyone else?"

If you mean individuals who will not toe the line regarding the standards set by society and who would change our way of living, then I for one would be for stamping them out of existence. There are a few groups of undesirables I would dearly love to put to the sword, but having just had a violation notice served on me, I will refrain from naming them. Have a star for the question.
