I would say about 1000 words minimum. But an essay doesnt need to be long, it only need to be interesting and properly written. Just don't ramble about nonsensical things. Stick to the point.

Normal essays are to be 800-1000 words. However, do not be concerned with the quantity as much as the quality.

Your best bet is to use the rule of thumb as in most gordon rule college courses. 575 words is best and takes up 2 pages 12 font, Times New Roman. If you find yourself drifting off make sure to reread your paper and physically highlight the most meaning points and elaborate on those.
BTW: Stick to 600wds at the most, any more than that the reader will certainly lose interest.

it really depends on the type of essay. the average essay will usually have 5-6 paragraphs.
this includes the topic paragraph, the concluding paragraph and 3-4 body paragraphs

Depending on what grade of school, it baries, from 250 to 1000. The higher the grade, the more that is expected.
