The main reason being that on the "News of the World" album, the two songs are really a medley;the Elektra single split the track into two separate songs (I had an Elektra "Spun Gold" reissue 45 of the two songs when I was a 5th grader).

EMI in the UK issued the two songs as separate singles but reissued them in the same fashion as Elektra in later years.

When they were originally released on vinyl 45 singles (I know, I'm showing my age), they were back to back. I forget which one was the release and which was the "freebie." Radio stations started playing both sides, and they became a "set."
