In the case of a vehicle still under warranty, the dealer may specify that servicing must be carried out by them, or other approved repairer (usually a "make-related" garage) to keep the warranty valid.
It also helps to identify possible faults before they become more serious, allowing repairs/replacements to be carried out before more serious damage happens (think about the expense of a toothed timing belt breaking at any reasonable engine speed!!!)
And in these days of ever increasing fuel prices, especially in the UK, routine servicing and repairs pays dividends in the end by better fuel economy and reduced downtime.

More for the down time, in other words, if you don't do a tune up when they suggest you do, it won't necessarily void your warranty. (that is a simple example, obviously warranty issues can be much more complex).
Doing routine preventative maintenance, will DEFINITELY save you from larger, more expensive, and more labor intensive repairs down the road.

Both, and also to keep the engine working as efficiently as possible (good performance, low consumption, low emissions, low noise).
