I assume you mean without lifting your pencil off the paper. Actually it takes four lines. I don't have a way of drawing the solution, but it does result in line segments that extend out beyond the three by three grid.

Number the dots 1 thru 9. The first row is 123. The second 456 and the third 789. If I say beyond, draw the line one length further than the last dot.

First line downward: 69 beyond
Second line diagonally left and up: 84 beyond
Third line horizontal: 123
Forth line diagonally left and down: 57

to connect the 9 dots, you can draw 4 straight lines not 3 without lifting your pen. . . . do not concentrate on the perimeter of the dots you need to extend your drawing lines beyond the dots. and you can make just like a bow and arrow. . . . in our real life you need to get out of your shell and explore yourself to some possibilities but when it comes to our character or attitude do not be so selfish you need to extend yourself so that you can reach others.

He means three lines without lifting the pencil. It's an old psychology problem. You just have to take the lines outside the square that the dots make.
